Simulation of emission characteristics
The simulation of the electronic structure of the Quantum Dots will be used as a reference for device design. Results of theoretical models will be compared with experimental optical data combined with the information on structural characterization.
The use of the nextnano software in the DOTSENSE project guarantees fast feedback calculations based on the input of ongoing experimental analysis.
III-nitride nano-objects realized by self-assembled growth of nano-heterostructures that represent the basis of the DOTSENSE technology are complex structures. This is not only due to the band-alignment, size-dependent quantum confinement and the presence of strain fields but in particular due to the presence of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization fields that have drastic impact on the band structure in the nano-objects and therefore on the transition energies. To investigate the impact of externally electric fields due to chemically induced variations of the surface potential on the luminescent properties and to optimize the transducer structures to be developed, numerical simulations are an important tool.
These studies will be carried out using the nextnano software which has been proven a powerful tool with respect to simulation of III-nitride quantum wells, quantum dots, bio sensors and many other nanscale structures:
